Why did you sign up for Different?
To be able to speak to those who have faced and are facing the same challenges and have an open and inclusive conversation about leadership aspirations and barriers. Working within such a group allowed an openness and determination that is not replicated elsewhere and is difficult to have within working environments.
What impact has Different made to you?
It was insightful to hear the lived and learned experiences of the cohort and be able to align with your own experiences in a safe space and the impact that this has had on career advancement. Also to see the confidence and determination grow by sharing experiences and challenges with others who understand what experiences are had by people of colour, but also how coming together and talking openly and hearing from those outside of local government makes you more equipped to deal with the challenges and strength in appreciating it can be overcome and that there is now an active support and drive to make the much needed change.
Why would you recommend joining Different?
Different should not have to exist but I would recommend it as it delivered an ability to grow and develop in a space that is not readily available elsewhere and is needed.
